Spoorbrug Oosterbeek (Railway Bridge Oosterbeek) The Oosterbeek railway bridge over the Nederrijn near Arnhem is part of the Arnhem – Nijmegen railway line. The bridge consists of five landing bridges on the north side, an arch bridge over the river and an approach bridge on the south side. The landing bridges are all 56 meters long and the main span is 132 meters. On the north side of the river, the railway line runs along the municipal boundary through the Rosandepolder, on the south side it separates the neighborhoods Elderveld and De Laar on the east side and Schuytgraaf on the west side. History The current bridge is the fifth version. The first railway bridge was built in 1879 to a design by ir. J.G. van den Bergh and had several arches and an extra pillar in the river. On May 10, 1940, the bridge was blown up during the German attack, and on November 19 the destroyed bridge was replaced by a bridge from Zaltbommel by the German occupiers. Because it consisted of only one track, signal booths were erected on both sides of the bridge from which train traffic was regulated. However, the bridge was destroyed again during the Battle of Arnhem, and then replaced by a temporary bridge from Dordrecht. In 1952 it was replaced by the definitive bridge as it still stands today. Even now, the International Air Transport Association’s 3-letter code is set (MUS), and it is set so that it can be diverted in an emergency such as equipment trouble, but the type of aircraft is limited due to the short runway. Saint Stephen’s Church, Nijmegen The Great Church or St. Stephen’s Church colloquially called Steven’s Church, is the oldest and largest church in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The church is built on a small hill, the Hundisburg. The history of St. Stephen’s dates back to the seventh century. The foundation of the church may be connected with the Christianization campaign of bishop Kunibert of Cologne in the seventh century. In 1247 Nijmegen came under the control of Count Otto II of Gelredome. For strategic reasons, St. Stephen’s was moved from the Kelfkensbos to its current location on the Hundisburg. The present church was consecrated in 1273 by Albertus Magnus. Administratively, St. Stephen’s fell under the authority of the chapter of the Basilica of the Holy Apostles, Cologne. The church has long been the only parish in the city. The building was expanded several times in the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, including an impressive ambulatory. Pope Pius IV authorized the establishment of its own chapter, in 1475, making St. Stephen’s independent of Cologne. In 1591 Saint Stephen’s was converted to a Protestant church after the city was captured from the Spanish (during which the steeple was severely damaged), which it has remained since except for a Catholic interlude around 1670. Catherine of Bourbon was buried in the St. Stephen’s Church, in 1469. Her son, Charles of Gelre, paid to have a monument to her placed in the church, which remains to this day. In 1810 is by royal decree the church property was transferred to the Reformed Church; the civil community retained the ownership of the tower, as part of the city defenses. The church was severely damaged by the bombing of 1944, but was rebuilt until 1969. Boterwaag (Nijmegen) De Boterwaag is a weighing house in Nijmegen located on the Grote Markt and built around 1612-1613 to a design by Cornelis Janssen van Delft. The Renaissance forms are related to the style of Hendrick de Keyser. The building was restored in 1886 by Jan Jacob Weve. The city weighhouse was housed on the right (west side) of the building. On the ground floor was a meat hall, with gates through which wagons and carts could enter, and inside three cross-rib vaults on pillars. A few houses were also temporarily furnished in the building. Specially for VFR flying Netherlands. Nijmegen Landmarks. De Oversteek Bridge The Crossing (also known as the City Bridge) is a bridge for car traffic over the Waal, located in Nijmegen. By council decision of 2 March 2016, the road across the bridge has been renamed General James Gavinsingel since 5 May 2016. [1] The river crossing was opened in November 2013 and is located west of two existing Nijmegen bridges. On the south side the bridge connects to the Verlengde Energieweg, on the north side to the Graaf Alardsingel. The Crossing is part of the new city route S100 that opened when the bridge was opened to all traffic on November 24, 2013. In Memory: In memory of the Waal crossing in 1944 by members of the US Army 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the 82nd Airborne Division, the bridge and the road over it bears the name ‘De Oversteek’ (Eng: The Crossing). [9] This name was officially adopted by the city council in June 2009. Two veterans from the Second World War were present at the opening, as well as relatives of the 48 soldiers who died in the action. As a tribute to these men, the bridge is equipped with 48 pairs of lampposts that, after switching on the city lights, switch on pair after pair from south (Nijmegen) to north (Lent), at the pace of a slow march. [10] This light artwork, called Lights Crossing, was conceived by Atelier Veldwerk. Since October 19, 2014, as a daily tribute, every evening at sunset, at least one veteran walks the so-called Sunset March across the bridge during the lighting of the 48 lights one by one. Porto Venere is a town and comune (municipality) located on the Ligurian coast of Italy in the province of La Spezia. It comprises the three villages of Fezzano, Le Grazie and Porto Venere, and the three islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. In 1997 Porto Venere and the villages of Cinque Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The village lies at the southern end of a peninsula, which, breaking away from the jagged coastline of the Riviera di Levante, forming the western tip of the Gulf of La Spezia. At the end of this peninsula are three small islands: Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto; only Palmaria Island, which lies directly opposite the village of Porto Venere beyond a narrow strait, is partially inhabited. The Church of St. Peter, consecrated in 1198. It was built over a pre-existing 5th-century Palaeo-Christian church, which had rectangular plan and semicircular apse. The new part, from the 13th century, is marked externally by white and black stripes. The Romanesque church of St. Lawrence, erected in 1098 by the Genoese probably occupies the site of ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter. The church was damaged by a fire in 1340 and by the Aragonese attack in 1494, and was further restored in 1582. The Doria Castle with the walls around the historic center. The Grotta dell’Arpaia (now collapsed), known as Byron’s Grotto, from which the English poet Byron swam across the gulf of La Spezia to San Terenzo to visit Shelley in Lerici, in 1822. The medieval nucleus of Le Grazie is set around the 14th-century Church of Our Lady of the Graces; nearby is a medieval convent which once belonged to the Olivetans and the remains of the 1st century BCE Roman villa of Varignano. Finds from recent excavations at the villa are held in the Antiquarium della Villa Romana del Varignano in Porto Venere. Nijmegen Railway Bridge The Nijmegen railway bridge is a truss bridge spanning the River Waal, connecting the city of Nijmegen to the town of Lent in the Netherlands. The bridge was reconstructed in 1984, still in the truss style but only one arch was kept in the design. Only the brick abutment remains from the original structure. This land abutment was to be demolished during the reconstruction but protests from the local Nijmegen residents prevented this and it was instead declared a national monument. In 2004, a bicycle bridge known as the Snelbinder was added to the eastern side of the bridge. The third level of the bridge was reconstructed in 2008, precisely from the original building plans.
