Está situada a 155 m. de altitud y es la capital de la provincia de Lérida y de la comarca del Segriá, a orillas del rio Segre. Es la ciudad más importante de la Cataluña interior. A sus habitantes se les denominan leridanos o ilerdenses. Su topónimo viene de la sede de una población íbera “Ilergete”, cuyos caudillos opusieron resistencia en el S.V a. C. a las tropas de los Escipiones durante la 2ª guerra púnica. Durante la dominación romana se llamó “Ilerda” y desempeñó un papel importante durante la guerra civil entre César y Pompeyo, hasta que Julio César derrotó a Pompeyo en el año 49 a.C. Los árabes se apoderaron de ella en el 719, hasta que en 1149 el Conde de Barcelona, Ramón Berenguer IV la reconquistó a los musulmanes. En el 1300 el rey Jaume II funda el único centro universitario de la corona de Aragón. En 1714 Felipe V tras su victoria en la Guerra de la Sucesión, la Seu Vella pasó a ser cuartel militar. Debido a los continuos cambios de nombre, es conocida como la “Ciudad de los nombres”. La Seu Vella Está situada dentro del Castillo Real, en la zona más alta de la ciudad. Ha sido declarada Monumento Histórico-Artístico y está dedicada a Santa María. Fue construida en 1203 en estilo de transición del románico tardío al gótico. El campanario del S.XIV es octogonal y tiene 70 m. de altura, adornado con pináculos y ventanales alargados. Es la torre más alta de Cataluña. Castillo Real Rodeado de una zona verde, fue construido sobre la antigua suda sarracena. Lo que queda es medieval, correspondiente a la fortificación que hizo construir el rey Pedro III en el S.XIV. También conserva fragmentos de la murallas borbónicas, formadas por distintas puertas, muros, explanadas y fosos.
