Roma, Vela di Calatrava v1.0
La “Vela” (“The Sail”) was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in the early 2000s on behalf of Roma’s University of Tor Vergata and was to host the 2009 World Swimming Championships, but the works were not completed in time. Since then, the huge abandoned structure remains a notable landmark, perhaps a little melancholy, but impossible to miss in the south landscape of the Italian Capital La Vela has located less than 6 km in a straight fly NE from the Rome Ciampino Airport (LIRA) runway.
