The Hand of the Desert The Hand of the desert is a sculpture located 75 km south of the city of Antofagasta, on one side of the Pan-American Route 5. It was built by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal, at 1100 m.a.s.l. The sculpture, built on the basis of reinforced concrete, has a height of 11 m. It was inaugurated on March 28, 1992 and its construction was paid for thanks to contributions from the Pro Antofagasta Corporation.
