Installation In Community. Irkutsk is a city in Russia. Located in Eastern Siberia, on the banks of the Angara River, at the confluence of the Irkut River (hence the name of the city), 66 km from Lake Baikal. A large scientific and educational center with over one hundred thousand students. Industries include aircraft construction, hydropower and food production. Transport junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway and federal highways “Baikal” and “Siberia”.An ancient Siberian city – founded as a prison in 1661. Badly damaged in a fire in 1716. The next major fire in 1879 caused such severe destruction that it took more than 10 years to fully rebuild the city.Belonged to the historical settlements of Russia; the historic city center is included in the preliminary UNESCO World Heritage List
