Campbell Airstrip (CSR)
The annual Iditarod race starts in Anchorage, on the first Saturday in March. The first checkpoint is Campbell Airstrip, about 10 miles from downtown Anchorage. From here, the mushers stop to load up the dog teams and transport them to Willow for the "official" start on the following day. Campbell is one of 24 airstrips and airports on the Iditarod Trail that runs from Anchorage to Nome. The Iditarod Airforce is a group of pilots who volunteer their time and planes to service the 24 race checkpoints.
