The Portuguese Air Force (Portuguese: Força Aérea Portuguesa, abbreviated as FAP) is the air branch of the Portuguese Armed Forces. Its origins date back to 1912, when the air branches of the army (Aeronáutica Militar) and the navy (Aviação Naval) began to be formed. On July 1, 1952, both branches merged into what is now the Portuguese Air Force.
